Throughout the club’s rich history, Gers fans have witnessed a number of iconic foreign players wear the team’s famous shirt. For example, Brian Laudrup is still discussed in the stands at Ibrox, while Jorg Albertz is an undoubted club legend. However, alongside these European imports, the club has also signed players from the United States of America.

While we haven’t seen many American players make the same kind of impact as the creative Danish midfielder and the German free-kick specialist, there have been some solid additions from across the pond. Not every American signing has gone to plan, though. Still, considering they come from a part of the world where the NBA dominates and fans assess NFL Thursday betting lines ahead of any other pastime, they’ve clearly done well to make it to one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious football clubs.

With some notable American footballers turning out for the Teddy Bears in the last decade or two, below we highlight some of them. While some players aren’t worth remembering, others more than played their part in the Rangers’ journey.

Maurice Edu’s late winner will always be remembered

A midfield general Rangers fans will always speak highly of, Maurice Edu helped to bring home two League Cups and two league titles. Between 2008-2012, Edu was widely viewed as one of the finest players in his position in Scotland. For Rangers fans, his crowning moment arrived when he scored a memorable stoppage time winner against rivals Celtic in 2010. From that moment onwards, Maurice Edu was a club legend.

Claudio Reyna is always welcome at the club

Claudio Reyna is a former player most Gers fans adore. Having led the side to two league titles and Scottish Cup glory, Reyna is seen by many as the most successful American signing the club has ever made. In fact, Claudio Reyna goes down in history as the first American footballer to win a top domestic title in Europe. Legend.

DaMarcus Beasley had numerous injury problems

On his day, DaMarcus Beasley was dangerous. Frustratingly, though, the American suffered with numerous injuries during his Rangers career. Signed from PSV in 2007 after impressing on-loan at Manchester City the season before, the electric winger still managed to shine on occasions despite being on the treatment table more often than not. In his three years at the club, Beasley won cups and league titles, although many fans also recall his goal against Lyon in the Champions League.

Carlos Bocanegra joined the club under difficult circumstances

Snapping up vastly experienced defender Carlos Bocanegra was seen as a bit of coup back in 2011. The former Fulham man had Premier League pedigree, while he’d also made big moves in the past to clubs like Rennes and Saint-Étienne in France. On paper, it was a move that made a lot of sense. Sadly, though, the consummate professional joined just before the club went into administration. It was therefore a move that didn’t last as long as it probably should have, although Bocanegra still managed to stand out in his 41 appearances for Rangers.

Gedion Zelalem has vanished into obscurity these days

When Gedion Zelalem arrived on-loan from Premier League giants Arsenal in 2015, Rangers fans were understandably excited. In the end, it proved to be a shrewd move as the youngster helped the club win the Scottish Championship and secure promotion. Overall, his potential was clear to see. Madly, though, the midfielder failed to build on his time with Rangers after spells in America and the Netherlands, and his since vanished into obscurity at the age of just 29.
